Women and technology - an interview with our apprentice Sabrina

Promoting young talent is a priority and strategic task for every company. Vocational training is a very important part of this. The trend in new apprenticeship contracts, particularly in the district of Kelheim, is extremely positive, as the latest statistics from the Regensburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Upper Palatinate/Kelheim show. The number of new apprentices rose by 12.1% in 2013 compared to the previous year, and by almost 55% since 2000. Companies in the district are therefore showing great commitment to training young people. For Gammel Engineering, too, it is a matter of course to offer high-quality apprenticeships in future-oriented professions. Our apprentice Sabrina Haas tells us more about her job and her experience at Gammel Engineering in an interview. Why did you choose this line of work?

How do you like your job? Sabrina: I really like my job as a technical system planner. Technical system planning is what used to be known as technical drawing - except that training as a technical system planner is more up-to-date and more in tune with the needs of our time. My apprenticeship lasts 3.5 years, and I spend part of my time at vocational school and part in the office at Gammel Engineering. I'm part of a team right from the start of my apprenticeship, which means I always have someone to Contact person for my questions and can discuss difficult contexts and tasks with experienced colleagues. I create drawings and plans in the office and I like the variety - we work with different trades, for example heating, plumbing or air conditioning. I also carry out calculations, so my job is really never boring!

And how do you find working in a profession that is dominated by men? Sabrina: Well, I don't really find it any different to working with women. Men are just as nice and likeable! I enjoy working with my team and we all get on well. As a woman, I don't feel like a less valuable team member here and I'm not treated like one. The tone is perhaps sometimes a little harsher than for women, but I don't think that has anything to do with the engineering profession itself! I would recommend all girls who are interested in technology to do an internship in this field - it was definitely the best career choice for me!
